Colby Co.’s summer outing weekend was held at the Flagstaff Hut which is a part of the Maine Huts and Trails system. Over the course of the weekend, the group participated in canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, trail riding, and field day activities on or near Flagstaff Lake.
Maine Huts and Trails is a non-profit organization that operates a 30 mile hut to hut system in western Maine. The Flagstaff Hut is located on the east, undeveloped shore of Flagstaff Lake. The hut is accessible via a 2 mile hike from the trailhead.
All three huts in the MH&T system are off the grid and utilize a variety of sustainable design features including solar panels, wood gasification boilers, composting toilets, energy efficient lighting, and low flow sinks and showers. Much of the food at the hut is locally sourced.
Adam Greenlaw, Sam Thomas, Laura Clough, Sarah Emily Teaford and Calen Colby participated in the 14th Annual Beach to Beacon 10K on August 4, 2011. According to beach2beacon.org, the B2B had a record setting 5,876 participants from 12 countries, 43 states and more than 200 Maine towns. The course begins in Cape Elizabeth and winds along the coast before ending at the scenic Portland Head Light.
B2B was founded by TD Bank and Olympic gold medalist and Maine native Joan Benoit Samuelson and it benefits a different charity each year. The beneficiary of this year’s race was Day One, a non-profit agency providing substance abuse prevention, intervention, treatment, and aftercare programs for Maine youth.
Colby Company is providing the mechanical, plumbing and electrical design of a $9.1M design-build project of a new building which will provide specialized firearms qualification capabilities. The building is located at the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.
The firing range building includes firing ranges; an armory; and administration and support spaces. The firing ranges will provide specialized firearms qualification capabilities including known distance small arms qualification, tactical maneuvering training, and simulated scenario training. The armory will provide secure storage areas for weapons and ammunition. The administration and support spaces include a classroom, offices, and an Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer room.
The project integrates sustainable design features and strategies into the design to minimize energy consumption using the USGBC LEED®-NC program with the goal to achieve a Gold rating. Sustainable features include a geothermal heat pump system, an Energy Recovery Ventilator and a solar thermal water.
Calen Colby, President of Colby Co., participated in the 2010 New York City Marathon in November 2010. Calen ran as a member of the Livestrong Team for which he raised $3,500. The Livestrong Team is made up of numerous sub-teams and Calen was a part of the 12-person “Team Fatty” team. The team was named for its captain, Eldon Nelson a.k.a. the Fat Cyclist, a popular cancer fundraiser and author of the fatcyclist.com blog.
The NYC marathon course starts in Staten Island and travels through all five boroughs with a scenic ending in Central Park. One of the largest marathons in the world, the NYC Marathon recorded 45,103 finishers in 2010. The fundraising goal for all charities represented by runners in the 2010 NYC Marathon was $24 Million.
