Colby Co. was recently named as one of the 2020 Best Places to Work in Maine, ranking #4 in the Small Business Category. This statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Maine, benefiting the state’s economy, its workforce and businesses. The 2020 Best Places to Work in Maine list is made up of 75 companies in three size categories: small (15-49 U.S. employees), medium (50-249 U.S. employees) and large (250+ U.S. employees).
Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Places to Work in Maine. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, and demographics. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience which is worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation.
Comments from the anonymous survey included:
“I feel like they trust me to make decisions and they support me when I need additional direction and/or help solving an issue. They tell us that “family comes first” and they mean it. They go out of their way to show that they care, such as the state park pass, lots of free food, bonuses and flex hours.”

(HANOVER, N.H.) — Today Colby Co. helped break ground for the new Climatic Chamber Building.
The building, which is being built for the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), will serve as a facility to help test and examine extreme cold-weather environments. Those environments are required for Soldier and unit readiness. Colby Co.’s Architects and Engineers provided the design for the building.
Colby Co. CEO, Sarah Emily Colby, and President, Calen Colby, were on site to help break ground, along with U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New England District Commander Col. John A. Atilano II, CRREL Director Dr. Joseph Corriveau, and New England District Project Manager Caitlin Slattery.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the new facility will allow the laboratory to perform development and research on material systems and vehicles at temperatures as low as negative 54 degrees Celsius.
(MILLINOCKET) — Colby Co. recently spent a weekend white water rafting on the Penobscot River.
Seventeen employees joined in the fun. CCE was proud to host an event where employees could spend some time with each other after spending months working remotely, while remaining safe and following all COVID safety requirements, guidelines, and protocols.
Employees met at the New England Outdoor Center and spent the afternoon swimming, walking along the trails, and socializing – including having an outdoor dinner together by the fire.
The next morning, employees headed to the Penobscot River, and spent the entire day white water rafting.

Colby Co. was proud to host a COVID-friendly event as a way to thank its employees for all of their hard work during this tough year, and hopes to make white water rafting an annual event.
Colby Co. was recently awarded an Architecture and Engineering Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract by the General Services Administration (GSA). The five-year contract is intended to provide A/E services to the GSA’s New England Region.
The GSA is the nation’s largest landlord, with more than 360 million square feet of owned and leased space. Colby Co.’s contract will support the GSA’s mission to renovate, upgrade and modernize existing facilities, including many legacy contemporary and historic buildings in the New England Region which encompasses Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Colby Co. has supported the GSA since 2013 for projects at New England sites including the U.S. Customs House in Portland, Maine; the Gignoux Courthouse in Portland; Maine; the John F. Kennedy Federal Building in Boston, Massachusetts; and the John Joseph Moakley Courthouse in Boston, Massachusetts.
Aaron Bundy joined Colby Co. as a Fire Protection Engineer and he brings 18 years of experience with fire protection engineering and fire alarm systems. Aaron has a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue and a Masters of Science in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He has broad experience in code consulting, life safety, fire alarm, emergency voice alarm communication, mass notification systems, and fire/smoke modeling for military, federal and commercial clients.
Colby Co. is providing LED lighting consultant services to assist the City as it transitions 6,600 existing high pressure sodium street lights to LEDs. We assisted the City during the contractor selection process and we are continuing to support the City by answering technical questions, reviewing designs and calculations, attending project meetings and conducting site visits. The replacement project is estimated to reduce the City’s electricity consumption for street lighting by 2.7 million kWh per year. For the fifth year in a row, Colby Co. sponsored a Trek Across Maine team. The Trek is a 180-mile, three day bike ride across Maine that raises money to benefit the Maine chapter of the American Lung Association. The Trek started at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine on Friday, June 16th and finished in Belfast, Maine on Sunday, June 18th. The Trekkers spent the first night at UMaine in Farmington and the second night at Colby College in Waterville. Approximately 2,000 cyclists participate in the Trek each year.
Colby Co. recently added Don Dyer, RA, and Allen Saucier, PE to our team. Don is a Registered Architect with 35 years of architectural design and project management experience with a variety of building types including hospitals, nursing homes, schools, cafeterias, office buildings, housing, municipal, and federal government projects. Don received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona and he is registered with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
Allen is a Registered Professional Mechanical and Controls Engineer with 25 years of engineering experience and his mechanical skills include control system design and programming, PLC programming, communication networks design, web-based application development with database design; design of combined-cycle power plant balance of plant systems; design of paper machine through-air dryers and hot air systems; and military service. His controls experience includes using various networks and protocols (RS232/422/485, Modbus Serial and TCP, Ethernet/IP, DNP3 Serial and TCP) along with the proprietary software, hardware and communication protocols from PLCDirect, Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Software (RSLogix5, RSLogix500, and RSLogix5000) GE (Proficy iFIX, Cimplicity, Machine Edition) and Siemens (Step7). He received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maine in Orono, Maine. In addition to his Mechanical Engineering PE license, Allen also successfully passed the Control System Engineer exam.
