Civil Engineer

We currently have an opening for a Civil Engineer with years of experience in site design and planning, coordinating with multiple disciplines, and construction phase services in a consulting engineering design firm setting.  We are looking for an energetic individual who is interested in working on a wide variety of design and construction administration projects. In addition to an outstanding technical skillset, s/he will be a quick, flexible thinker and problem-solver who is accustomed to working in fluid teams on tight deadlines.

Desired traits:

  • BS in Civil Engineering
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D
  • PE License a plus
  • Experience with permitting, site design, layout and materials plans, grading and drainage plans, erosion and sedimentation control plans, pre and post-development drainage plans, roadway plans, utility cross sections, gravity sewers, pump stations, and stormwater BMPs.
  • Experience with local, state and federal permitting including Department of Environmental Protection Stormwater, Site Location of Development, NRPA, and US Army Corps of Engineers
  • Experience with site assessment, construction administration and construction management
  • Experience with Federal projects and an understanding of the United Facilities Criteria (UFC) a plus but not required.
  • Experience with HydroCAD considered a plus
  • Strong oral presentation and writing skills

Structural Engineer

We currently have an opening for a Structural Engineer with 5+ years of building design and analysis experience in a consulting engineering design firm setting. We are looking for an engineer who can perform a broad range of designs and analysis including reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry and wood framing systems. The successful candidate will bring a deep, successful track record of design, quality control and construction administration. In addition to an outstanding technical skillset, they will be a quick, flexible thinker and problem-solver who is accustomed to working in fluid teams on tight deadlines.

Responsibilities: 

  • Research, plan and design a variety of buildings and non-building structures for government, industrial and commercial clients 
  • Prepare code compliant plans and coordinate drawings for a broad range of designs utilizing reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry and wood framing systems
  • Work on multidisciplinary design teams, primarily in house but also subconsultants
  • Collaborate with the all disciplines to prepare presentations and produce documents from schematic design through to the construction phase
  • Conduct and document site visits, process submittals, substitution requests, and RFI’s during construction

Desired traits:

  • Experience with the design of reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry and wood framing systems
  • Experience with RISA 3D and the RISA suite of structural analysis software or similar structural analysis software.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit
  • PE License considered a plus, but not required

Fire Protection Engineer

We are looking for an engineer who can perform a broad range of fire protection engineering designs including building and life safety code analysis, fire protection (fire alarm, sprinkler and special hazard systems) and mass notification on commercial, institutional, and industrial projects. The successful candidate will bring a deep, successful track record of design, quality control and construction administration. This position is a part of the MEP Engineering Department which is comprised of fire protection, mechanical and electrical engineers. Additionally, Colby Co. offers structural, civil engineering and architecture with our in-house staff. Projects range in size from $50,000 to $90M in construction value for State, Federal, Industrial and Commercial clients.

Desired traits:

  • Experience with Life Safety Code Consulting, Performance Based Design, and Fire Protection System Design
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, including how Fire Protection Systems coordinate with other Building Systems
  • Successful completion of the FE exam
  • PE License a plus
  • Experience with HydraCAD, or other modeling software a plus
  • Sustainable design experience a plus
  • Experience with AutoCAD a plus

Electrical Engineer

Project Manager

We currently have an opening for a Project Manager with 10+ years of experience in building design, project management, and or construction management in a consulting engineering design firm setting.  We are looking for an energetic individual who is interested in leading design teams comprised of multiple disciplines and subcontractors. In addition to being the single point of contact, the Project Manager would be responsible for managing the scope, schedule, and budget for projects ranging from $50,000 to $90M in construction value.

The position is part of the Project Management and Construction Management Department. The successful candidate will bring a deep, successful track record of design, quality control and construction administration. In addition to an outstanding technical skill set, this person should be a quick, flexible thinker and problem-solver who is accustomed to working in fluid teams on tight deadlines. This full-time position will be based at Colby Co.’s office in Portland, Maine.  Occasional travel may be required.

Desired traits:

  • BS in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in building design, facilities engineering and construction with 5+ years of demonstrated success in a similar position
  • Professional Engineers (PE), Registered Architect (RA), or Certified Construction Manager (CCM) a plus
  • In-depth inter-disciplinary knowledge of building systems, including structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection
  • Understanding of building code requirements and the industry standard of care
  • Experience with design document and specification preparation, including projects for federal and state government agencies
  • Experience with construction scheduling, cost estimating, and construction phase services a plus
  • Independent worker who can complete a task with minimal supervision
  • Attention to detail and ability to communicate and collaborate across teams
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, RS Means
