Colby Company is providing the mechanical, plumbing and electrical design of a $9.1M design-build project of a new building which will provide specialized firearms qualification capabilities. The building is located at the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.
The firing range building includes firing ranges; an armory; and administration and support spaces. The firing ranges will provide specialized firearms qualification capabilities including known distance small arms qualification, tactical maneuvering training, and simulated scenario training. The armory will provide secure storage areas for weapons and ammunition. The administration and support spaces include a classroom, offices, and an Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer room.
The project integrates sustainable design features and strategies into the design to minimize energy consumption using the USGBC LEED®-NC program with the goal to achieve a Gold rating. Sustainable features include a geothermal heat pump system, an Energy Recovery Ventilator and a solar thermal water.
