Colby Co. was recently named as one of the 2019 Best Places to Work in Maine, ranking #3 in the Small Business Category. This statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Maine, benefiting the state’s economy, its workforce and businesses. The 2019 Best Places to Work in Maine list is made up of 75 companies in three size categories: small (15-49 U.S. employees), medium (50-249 U.S. employees) and large (250+ U.S. employees).
Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Places to Work in Maine. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, and demographics. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience which is worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation.

Colby Co. celebrated its 10th year in business with employees and friends at the Ocean Gateway. Started in 2008 by Calen and Sarah Emily Colby, Colby Co. has grown to a 40-person multi-discipline firm offering civil, structural, mechanical, fire protection, and electrical engineering and architecture.
Aaron Bundy joined Colby Co. as a Fire Protection Engineer and he brings 18 years of experience with fire protection engineering and fire alarm systems. Aaron has a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue and a Masters of Science in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He has broad experience in code consulting, life safety, fire alarm, emergency voice alarm communication, mass notification systems, and fire/smoke modeling for military, federal and commercial clients.
Brian Beaulieu, PE (Class of ‘04), and Arden McSwain, EIT (Class of ‘17) spoke to the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) at the University of Maine about Demolition and Construction engineering. In addition to building design, Colby Co. performs Demolition & Construction Engineering for contractors to properly phase their projects to ensure a safe, efficient and successful project. Our role is to determine how structures can safely be disassembled while maintaining a structurally stable structure throughout demolition.
Celebrating its 30th year, Architalx’s mission is to broaden awareness and understanding of architecture, landscape architecture and design by sponsoring lectures that foster evocative and creative dialogue within the design community and the with the general public. It’s goal is to enrich the community by gathering speakers from across the globe to bring world-class ideas and design to Maine. The Spring 2018 Lecture Series Speakers include Matthew Mazzotta, Brad Cloepfil, Jennifer Siegal, Jen Toy and Chelina Odbert. Colby Co. is a Patron sponsor of the 2018 Lecture Series.
Colby Co. is providing LED lighting consultant services to assist the City as it transitions 6,600 existing high pressure sodium street lights to LEDs. We assisted the City during the contractor selection process and we are continuing to support the City by answering technical questions, reviewing designs and calculations, attending project meetings and conducting site visits. The replacement project is estimated to reduce the City’s electricity consumption for street lighting by 2.7 million kWh per year. Colby Co. provided company-wide safety training for architects, engineers, CADD designers and project managers. The OSHA 10-Hour Training for the Construction Industry course addressed basic safety and health information and education training for workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces in the construction industry.
